Two Week Check Up

Well we have a growing little boy. In one weeks time Evan gained 7 ounces, which is an ounce a day and the minimum he should be gaining. This puts him at 8 pounds 7 ounces, which is two ounces under his birth weight. The doctor still isn't thrilled and would like to see him put on more weight. He suggests that we give him more supplemental formula than what we've been doing. Personally I'm going to call the lactation consultant and see what she thinks. Aside from his weight I had the doctor check his frenulum to see if it needed clipped. I thought that perhaps this could be the issue with our rough nursing. He looked at it and said that his frenulum is normal and then had Evan suck on his finger so he could evaluate his ability to suck. Evan chowed down and the doctor said that he is simply an aggressive sucker. He thinks that what is happening is that Evan sucks so hard that he is pulling my nipple to the roof of his mouth and sucking so hard that it is causing the ridge and blistering of the nipple. FABULOUS.... I have a hoover and it doesn't appear there is much I can do about it. I may be stuck nursing him with a nipple shield. This is not what I wanted to hear at all. So for now, I'll deal and maybe, just maybe in the future we can wean from the nipple shield but it isn't looking promising. The doctor wants to see us back in ten to fourteen days, but at that point it will be time for his one month check up, so I'll just wait until then.

My name is Bobbi. My husband, Adam, and I have been married since September of 2007. We welcomed our daughter, Arabella, on December 31, 2008 and our son, Evan, on February 2, 2010. I'm a stay at home mommy who loves being able to be there for our children. Adam works for a communication company and has been there for ten years now. We are enjoying our time together and our newly expanded family. Things are hectic but all too fun with our Irish twins! I started the blog to keep everyone up to date with our going-ons and to give me a place to blow off steam from time to time. I hope you come back often an take a peek at the pictures I enjoy sharing.
